André Levy-Lang, chairman of the SCOR Foundation for Science, commented: “This year’s SCOR-PSE Junior Research Prize has been awarded to Ian Dew-Becker for his work entitled “Tail Risk in Production Network”, which studies the response of the economy to large shocks in the context of a general nonlinear network production model, with a focus on large deviations in GDP. The analysis shows that it is upstream sectors that produce inputs for a large fraction of GDP that are most systemically risky, i.e., a large shock to them will spill over into the rest of the economy, while sectors that exclusively produce final outputs do not produce systemic risk. Ian Dew-Becker’s research yields a description of the determinants of tail risk, a measure of the risk associated with large shocks to individual sectors, and an assessment of the tail of the probability distribution of GDP. This work is particularly inspiring and propitious.”

Under the scientific leadership of Gilles Saint-Paul (PSE, ENS) and the executive leadership of Axelle Ferrière (PSE, CNRS), the SCOR-PSE Chair, created in June 2017, aims to promote the development and dissemination of research into macroeconomic risk, in particular rare events and uncertainties that remain difficult to model. It publishes articles, organizes an annual conference and gives out the Junior Research Prize each year.
