A Genetic Multi-Risk (GenMR) Open-Source Platform to Model Compound Catastrophes – Annual Progress Report
October 2025 - September 2026
On September 24, the one-year meeting of the GenMR project, funded by the SCOR Foundation, took place to highlight the main progress achieved over the previous six months, since the March 2026 workshop.
For the first time, the meeting included the participation of the project’s partner, the University of Lisbon, represented by its lead, Prof. José Matos.
In the first presentation (see below), the project lead, Dr. Arnaud Mignan, presented the latest developments, including new models covering blackouts and socio-economic perils, ranging from business interruption to social unrest, as well as the multi-risk core now operational on GenMR. The latter enables the simulation of one-year time series that account for event seasonality, event clustering, domino effects, and climate-compounding.
The capabilities of the multi-risk core were demonstrated through a proof-of-work, with further applications to be developed during the second half of the project. Arnaud also presented the results of the project’s first scientific publication, currently submitted for review, entitled “Extending the Generic Multi-Risk Framework to Compounding Climate Risk: Heatwave, Wildfire & Blackout Interdependencies in a Digital Template.” The study includes the validation of the three peril models using data from California.
In the second presentation (see below), Prof. José Matos outlined the next steps, which include the implementation of a hydropower dam, its associated risk complexity, and dam-flood modelling for integration into the virtual environment developed as part of the project.
The presentations were followed by discussions with the SCOR team on the progress achieved and the next stages of the project
