On September 19, 2024, the SCOR Foundation for Science hosted a webinar titled “Do Cryptocurrencies matter?”, delivered by Stéphane Villeneuve, Professor of Applied Mathematics and former Dean of the Department of Mathematics at TSE (Toulouse School of Economics).

Can cryptocurrency be useful in countries where the government and central bank are dysfunctional? In this webinar, Stéphane Villeneuve analyzes the reasons why digital assets have gained popularity. He considers a simple general equilibrium model under uncertainty. Because of this uncertainty, agents value the opportunity to hold "safe" assets, whether in public or private money, helping them to buffer shocks.

Stéphane Villeneuve is a Professor of Applied Mathematics and former Dean of the Department of Mathematics at TSE (Toulouse School of Economics). He is also a member of the TSE-Partnership Foundation (TSE-P) where he coordinates the Chair on Risk Markets and Value Creation sponsored by SCOR Foundation. His research focuses on stochastic methods in finance and their applications for dynamic contracting.
