Mortality risk of climate change

Project “Who, when, and where? Assessing mortality risk of climate change”, supported by the SCOR Foundation

Research has increasingly identified links between climate change and human mortality. While there is no cause-of-death specifically referred to as climate change, environmental factors have always had a strong influence on population health and mortality.

This project will be a pioneering study to quantify the mortality risk associated with climate change for insurance risk management. It is an important research topic for life insurers, as it relates to actuarial pricing and product design, but remains an open question.

A cutting-edge Bayesian modelling approach will be proposed to estimate the non-linear relationship between mortality and temperature, while controlling for other factors that may also drive the mortality experience, treating climate change, socioeconomic variables, and mortality risk in an integrated manner.
