"What have we learnt on Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions over the Last Years?”

In the presentation on April 28, 2022, Nikolai Shapiro summarizes the state of the art of observations and physical understanding of earthquake and volcanic eruptions and its implication for the assessment of the related natural hazards.

With the growing population and developing infrastructure, the impact of largest natural disasters becomes more costly. In particular, largest volcanic eruptions similar to those that humanity experienced in the past (such as Tambora in 1815) might have much more dramatic consequences in the modern industrial era and should, therefore, be considered as a potential global-scale natural hazard.
